Medications Policy

This policy sets out the procedures under which Elstree and District Scouts will manage and administer prescribed medication to participants during residential events. Our priority is to uphold the health and safety of each participant through secure and responsible medication practices.

Elstree and District Scouts will administer only medication prescribed through the NHS. Private prescriptions or privately prescribed medications will not be accepted. Each NHS-prescribed medication must be accompanied by both a copy of the NHS prescription and a printed paper copy. These copies allow for accurate verification, consultation of NHS guidelines, and, if necessary, the ability to obtain an emergency supply.

Upon arrival at residential events, all prescribed medication should be placed in a clear, sealable sandwich bag labeled with the participant’s full name. At check-in, a designated leader from Elstree and District Scouts will collect and log each participant’s medication, which will be secured in a locked container with controlled access. A parent or guardian will also be required to complete and sign a monitoring form, confirming their understanding of these procedures and authorizing Elstree and District Scouts to monitor and administer the medication as prescribed.

Elstree and District Scouts take every precaution to secure each participant’s medication. However, we cannot accept responsibility for any lost or misplaced medication. In the unlikely event of medication loss, damage, or unavailability, we will consult NHS guidelines and, if needed, secure an emergency supply from a registered pharmacy. For essential medications where missed doses may impact health, every effort will be made to secure an emergency supply in line with NHS emergency protocols.

We strongly advise parents and guardians against sending the entire home supply of medication. It is essential to maintain an additional supply at home for continuity of care in case of unforeseen circumstances.

Medication administration and monitoring will be conducted exclusively by trained first aiders within Elstree and District Scouts. Any changes to dosage or administration instructions must be provided in writing, along with updated documentation from the prescribing NHS healthcare professional.

Please note that Elstree and District Scouts will not administer non-prescription or over-the-counter medications. Parents or guardians should administer any necessary over-the-counter medications before participant check-in.

This policy is designed to ensure Elstree and District Scouts maintain the highest standards in administering, securing, and monitoring prescribed medication, prioritizing the health and safety of all participants during residential events.
